BBQ spareribs

BBQ Spareribs
Our BBQ spareribs are a true treat for lovers of seriously good meat. These ribs are fully pre-cooked, generously marinated in a homemade spicy BBQ marinade, and ready to be grilled on the barbecue or in the oven until they shine with flavor. The meat is incredibly tender, falling off the bone with ease, and develops an irresistible sticky crust as it finishes on the grill. Whether you're hosting a summer cookout or craving the ultimate comfort food, these spareribs are guaranteed to steal the show.
What exactly are BBQ spareribs?
Spareribs are cut from the breast section of the pig and consist of a series of ribs with a generous amount of meat in between and on top. Because this part of the animal is naturally well-used, the meat has a firm texture that turns wonderfully tender when cooked slowly. The BBQ version is first slow-cooked to buttery softness, then marinated in a rich blend of smoky, sweet, and spicy flavors, and finally grilled until the sauce begins to caramelize. The result is a rib full of deep flavor, juicy meat, and a lightly caramelized crust that’s downright addictive.
Livar: Limburg monastery pork with character
These spareribs come from the renowned LIVAR pig, also known as the Limburg monastery pig. The animals are raised in and around the Lilbosch Abbey in Echt, where they are lovingly cared for by monks. They live in spacious barns and roam freely in the monastery gardens, where they root, roll, and enjoy a stress-free life. Their diet consists of locally grown grains, and you can truly taste that in the meat: rich, firm in texture, and full of distinctive flavor. LIVAR is the only pork in the Netherlands to carry the 3-star Beter Leven animal welfare label from the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals.

How to Prepare Spareribs?
Spareribs, especially the raw variant, are perfect for slow cooking. Want to eat spareribs within a few hours? Then cook the spareribs for 30 minutes in a marinade with a little water until tender.
Have enough time? Great! First, season your spareribs with a dry rub or a marinade. Ensure the BBQ has a temperature between 100 and 150 degrees Celsius. Place the spareribs – above a drip tray, not directly over the coals – with the bones facing down. Every half hour, baste them with something like apple juice. After an hour and a half, you can wrap the spareribs in aluminum foil for extra tender meat. After an hour in the foil, unwrap them and place them back on the grill for a while. Finish with a glaze.
The advantage of not pre-cooking is that the texture of the meat remains intact, giving it that satisfying bite.
Ways to Prepare Spareribs
Spareribs are perhaps one of the most popular low & slow BBQ dishes in the Netherlands. There are countless ways to prepare them, but below you'll find a guide and recipes to help you succeed.
Spareribs According to the 3-2-1 Method
This method comes from America and is particularly suitable for meaty ribs, such as belly ribs. If you're using thinner ribs (as is often the case in the Netherlands), you may want to adjust the times slightly. Either way, you should plan for about 5 to 6 hours, excluding preparation. But that’s the charm of it! How better to spend your Sunday afternoon? What does the method mean? The numbers represent time intervals. Not necessarily hours, although that’s usually the standard. On average, a low & slow preparation of spareribs (excluding preparation) takes about 6 hours. Generally, it’s 3 hours of smoking, 2 hours of steaming, and 1 hour of grilling. 3-2-1, in short. However, the times are flexible and depend on your taste and the type of meat. For example, with baby back ribs, you might choose to steam for just one hour. And since many BBQ enthusiasts dislike the meat falling off the bone, the steaming time is often reduced from 2 hours to 1. So, follow your instincts (and your meat).
