What is a Hamburger?

A hamburger: almost every meat lover enjoys it. But what exactly is a hamburger? This piece of meat is so globally ingrained that you might think it’s pre-cut from a cow or pig. Of course, that’s not true. According to Wikipedia, a hamburger is a patty of cooked or grilled meat, usually ground beef. While this might be an oversimplification, it’s essentially accurate. This makes the quality of the meat used even more important. Burgers come in many grades. A burger from fast-food chains like McDonald’s or Burger King has a large following but is incomparable to a thick, juicy Black Angus burger of 140 grams. While some burgers are machine-pressed, a truly good hamburger is crafted by hand. Either way, a hamburger is a versatile and beloved piece of meat. With over 15 premium burger varieties, The Butchery is one of the leading burger specialists in the Netherlands.

Where Does the Name Hamburger Come From?

Does the hamburger have anything to do with the German city of Hamburg? Yes, it does! German sailors were said to have brought burgers from Baltic ports to Hamburg. These round patties became wildly popular there and were soon mass-produced. Immigrants from Hamburg later introduced this dish to the U.S., where it was initially called "Hamburger Beefsteak." Eventually, the name was shortened to "hamburger." Today, there are countless variations of this name, and the burger has become a concept in itself. Cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, fish burgers, and more—all are possible! Our butchers love experimenting with this wonderful meat, creating incredible flavors and blends. For example, we offer Wagyu burgers (50% Japanese, 50% Australian) and over 10 flavors of USA Black Angus burgers.

How to Cook a Hamburger

Cooking a burger starts with choosing a quality patty. With burgers from The Butchery, you’re off to a great start! Planning to make a burger bun? Don’t forget to check out our hamburger buns!

Burgers on the BBQ
Ensure the burgers are fully thawed by placing them in the fridge a day before cooking. Fire up the BBQ and use a combination of direct and indirect heat. Grill the burgers for a few minutes on the direct heat zone, then flip them. Move them to the indirect heat zone to cook through. You can also add a slice of cheese to melt over the top. Meanwhile, slice the buns and toast them for a few minutes on the direct heat zone. Build your burger to perfection!

Burgers in the Pan
Ensure the burgers are fully thawed by placing them in the fridge a day before cooking. Heat a pan with oil, butter, or ghee. Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare. If you prefer your burgers well-done, let them cook a bit longer on low heat with the lid on.

Food Pairing with Burgers

Black Angus beef pairs beautifully with various flavors, and our butchers have passionately crafted amazing combinations. Cheddar/jalapeno, Old Amsterdam/mustard, mozzarella/basil/tomato, gorgonzola/cranberry, sun-dried tomato/Parmigiano—just a few of the incredible Black Angus burger flavors we offer. Looking to order an out-of-the-box burger?

Black Angus Burger

As mentioned, The Butchery works extensively with USA Black Angus beef. A 100% certified USA Black Angus burger is, in our opinion, the ultimate American burger experience. These burgers are tender and juicy, thanks to the beautiful marbling of this remarkable breed. Our Black Angus burgers are ground and crafted in-house, with each patty weighing about 140 grams. These are substantial burgers, perfect for BBQ lovers and just as delightful in the pan.

Our Angus burgers come from North American Black Angus cattle, raised naturally and free from artificial additives. Farmers follow the "Non-Hormone Treated Cattle" guidelines, ensuring the animals receive no hormones, preventive antibiotics, or animal by-products. These cattle graze on expansive pastures, feeding on grass, herbs, and other natural resources. It takes time, but the result is worth it.

Burger Battle

Burgers come in all shapes and sizes, and the possibilities are endless. There isn’t a single recipe that works for everyone because taste is personal. Our Butchery Burger Battle last summer showcased some incredible burger creations. From a surf-and-turf burger with octopus to homemade steamed buns with Asian flavors and taco burgers—everything made an appearance. Here’s a small compilation...
