How to Cook Ground Meat? Tips and Tricks
Ground meat is a versatile ingredient that can be used in countless dishes. Therefore, one method of preparation is difficult to define. Whether you're making meatballs, hamburgers, or a ground meat sauce: below you'll find handy tips and tricks for preparing ground meat, ensuring you always get a flavorful and juicy result!
Step 1: Choose Good Ground Meat
Preparation begins with choosing the right ground meat. For example, if you choose quality meat, the loss of moisture will be significantly less. Ground meat of lower quality often appears cheap, but due to moisture loss, it's often a bad bargain. We always say it's better to eat less often, but choose better meat.
Depending on your dish, you can choose from beef ground meat, half-and-half ground meat, chicken ground meat, or lamb ground meat. Pay attention to the fat percentage: lean ground meat, such as this Simmentaler beef ground meat, is ideal for a healthy meal, while a higher fat content (for example, 15-20%) adds extra flavor and juiciness. For meatballs, you might prefer a slightly fattier variant, while lean ground meat is perfect for light sauces or tacos.
Step 2: Preparing the Ground Meat
Take the ground meat out of the refrigerator about 15-20 minutes before preparation. This allows the meat to reach room temperature, ensuring it cooks more evenly. Preferably use a wooden or silicone spatula to break up the ground meat while cooking. This prevents the meat from becoming too fine and losing its structure.
Step 3: Adding Herbs and Flavors
Ground meat has a mild flavor on its own, so herbs and spices are essential. Add salt and pepper just before cooking to prevent the meat from losing moisture. Depending on the dish, you can add additional flavorings such as garlic, onions, cumin, paprika, or Italian herbs. For a more complex flavor, you can also use fresh herbs like parsley or thyme. And if you want to make it easy on yourself, there are of course pre-made ground meat seasonings available in various flavors.
Step 4: Frying or Searing
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil or butter. Allow the pan to become very hot before adding the ground meat. This ensures the ground meat immediately gets a nice brown color and loses less moisture. Add the ground meat to the pan and cook it without stirring for the first few minutes, allowing the meat to form a crust. Then use a (wooden) spatula to break the ground meat into smaller pieces.
Continue cooking the ground meat until it is no longer pink and there are no raw pieces visible. This typically takes 5-10 minutes, depending on the quantity and type of ground meat.
