Where Does the Name Surf & Turf Come From?
Food historians still can't agree on exactly where the name came from. What we do know is that the term originated in the United States in the late 1950s or early 1960s, when pairing steak with seafood became the ultimate way to celebrate a special occasion.
One story points to Los Angeles, where a 1958 advertisement promoted a "Turf 'n Surf Dinner" featuring filet mignon and lobster tail. Others credit Seattle, where a restaurant at the top of the Space Needle served Surf & Turf during the 1962 World's Fair. Then there's Massachusetts, where a restaurant advertised a "Champagne Surf 'n Turf Dinner" in 1966, complete with lobster and champagne. Three places, three stories—and no definitive answer.
The name itself is easy enough to explain. Surf represents the sea, while turf refers to the land. Together, they describe one iconic combination: premium meat and seafood served on the same plate.
Who came up with the name may still be a mystery, but one thing is certain—Surf & Turf is a classic combination that never goes out of style.

Which Steak Pairs Best with Which Seafood?
Not every combination is a perfect match. A rich, well-marbled steak needs seafood with enough flavour to stand alongside it, while delicate seafood can easily be overpowered by a heavier cut of beef. These are some of our favourite Surf & Turf pairings.
Ribeye + Prawns
A juicy ribeye has the richness to match perfectly with grilled prawns. Finish with garlic butter, and you've got a winning combination.
Sirloin Steak + Lobster
A true classic. Tender sirloin pairs beautifully with sweet, succulent lobster, especially when served with melted butter for that authentic steakhouse experience.
Entrecôte + Scallops
The rich fat cap of an entrecôte complements the delicate sweetness of seared scallops. Finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon to bring everything together.
Filet Mignon + Lobster Tail
One of the most luxurious Surf & Turf combinations. Lean, buttery filet mignon is perfectly balanced by the sweet, tender meat of a lobster tail.
Beef Burger + Prawns
Not technically a steak, but definitely worth trying. A quality beef burger topped with grilled prawns and a touch of garlic mayonnaise makes for a delicious twist on Surf & Turf.
As a general rule, the richer the cut of beef, the bolder your seafood can be. Leaner steaks pair best with more delicate seafood, creating a perfectly balanced plate every time.
