What is Asian Sliced Ribeye?

If you are somewhat familiar with Asian cuisine, you have probably heard of Shabu Shabu, Korean BBQ, or Teppanyaki. All of these are cooking techniques that prefer to use thinly sliced beef, such as thinly sliced ribeye. Our butchers slice the ribeye for the Asian kitchen in two thicknesses: 2mm slices and 4mm slices. This makes the 2mm ideal for hotpot dishes, but it could also be used very briefly on Teppanyaki. Even better for Teppanyaki (and Korean BBQ) are the 4mm steaks. Want to see more types of thinly sliced meat? Check out our Asian sliced entrecote or thinly sliced pork.

What is Shabu Shabu?

In the Netherlands, Shabu Shabu is a large all-you-can-eat sushi chain. But that is not the Shabu Shabu we are talking about. The Shabu Shabu we are referring to is an authentic Japanese hotpot dish where you cook thinly sliced meat and bite-sized vegetables in steaming hot broth. The main difference from other hotpot dishes is that in Shabu Shabu, the ingredients are not simmered all at once. Japanese Shabu Shabu is cooked bite by bite throughout the meal. Essentially similar to the more well-known fondue in the Netherlands. Commonly used meat for Shabu Shabu is primarily thinly sliced beef or thinly sliced pork. We have it from the finest meat breeds in our assortment. From Japanese Wagyu Kagoshima to Spanish Iberico pork…

How to Prepare Asian Sliced Ribeye?

How you prepare it entirely depends on which cooking technique you choose. In Shabu Shabu, you dip your sliced ribeye into a hotpot, while in Korean BBQ, you grill it on the table BBQ. Or are you opting for Teppanyaki? In Teppanyaki, you grill the 4mm slices on an iron plate. It's interesting to know that this is probably the oldest method of preparing food in Japanese. The story goes that it was invented when Japanese people grilled their fish on a spatula over the fire. Okay, we're getting sidetracked. Back to the preparation! Whatever method you choose, it needs to be quick and hot. In Shabu Shabu, ensure you have hot broth, and in Korean BBQ and Teppanyaki grilling, ensure you have a hot grilling surface. Serve with typical Japanese dips like sesame sauce and ponzu and enjoy!

What to Eat with Asian Sliced Ribeye?

The best thing about Shabu Shabu, Teppanyaki, and Korean BBQ is that you can completely choose what you prefer to eat; you can fully customize it. Craving Wagyu A5? Go for it! Prefer Black Angus USA? That's also perfectly fine. The same goes for the side dishes; feel free to choose whatever you like. Think of shiitake mushrooms, hokusai (Chinese cabbage), carrots, green onions, and enoki mushrooms. For dips accompanying the Japanese dishes, ponzu and sesame sauce are most commonly served. Serve steamed rice or ramen noodles with the thinly sliced beef and vegetables.

Which Breed of Thinly Sliced Ribeye to Choose?

Which breed of Asian sliced ribeye you should choose purely depends on your own preferences. Want the full experience with the Japanese dish? Then you must go for the Kagoshima Wagyu ribeye. It originates from Japan and truly belongs there. Besides Japanese Wagyu, The Butchery also has Australian Wagyu in the assortment, which is slightly more reasonably priced. We also have thinly sliced ribeye from Aberdeen Angus and Black Angus USA in our assortment, which are perfect for Japanese dishes. Both breeds are grain-fed, ensuring tender and soft meat. Additionally, Black Angus USA is of PRIME quality, meaning it is the best Black Angus meat from America. Want personal advice?
