What is a Hamburger?

A hamburger: almost every meat lover enjoys it. But what exactly is a hamburger? This piece of meat is so well-known worldwide that you might think it’s pre-cut from a cow or pig. Of course, it’s not. According to Wikipedia, a hamburger is a patty of cooked or grilled meat, usually ground beef. While that’s a bit simplistic, it’s essentially true. This makes the quality of the meat used extremely important. There are significant differences in burgers. A fast-food burger might have a big following, but it’s not comparable to a thick, juicy Black Angus burger of 140 grams. While some burgers are machine-pressed, a truly good hamburger is handcrafted. Whatever the case, a hamburger is a versatile and beloved piece of meat. At The Butchery, we embrace the possibilities of this iconic dish and offer more than 15 varieties of premium burgers, making us one of the leading burger specialists in the Netherlands.

Where Does the Name Hamburger Come From?

We were curious: does the hamburger have anything to do with the German city of Hamburg? Yes! German sailors first brought patties from Baltic ports to Hamburg. The round patties became a hit there and were soon produced on a large scale. Immigrants from Hamburg took this dish to the United States, where it was initially known as "Hamburger Beefsteak." Later, the name was shortened to "hamburger." Today, there are countless variations, and the burger has become a concept in its own right. Cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, fish burgers, and more: the options are endless. Whether it’s a Black Angus burger, an Angus burger, a beef burger, or a Wagyu burger, it all depends on the base meat. Our butchers love experimenting with this fantastic meat, creating unique flavors and blends. For example, we offer stunning Wagyu burgers (50% Japanese/50% Australian) and more than 10 flavors of USA Black Angus burgers.

How to Cook a Hamburger?

Cooking a burger starts with choosing a good patty. With burgers from The Butchery, you’re already on the right track! Making a hamburger bun? Don’t forget to grab some quality burger buns!

Hamburger on the BBQ
Ensure the burgers are properly thawed; place them in the fridge the day before preparation. Light the BBQ and use a combination of direct and indirect heat. Grill the burgers for a few minutes on the direct heat zone, then flip them. Move the burgers to the indirect heat zone to finish cooking. You can optionally add a slice of cheese at this stage to let it melt. Meanwhile, slice the burger buns and grill them for a few minutes on the direct heat zone. Then assemble your burger.

Hamburger in a Pan
Ensure the burgers are properly thawed; place them in the fridge the day before preparation. Heat a pan and cook the burgers in oil, butter, or ghee for about 5 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Prefer your burgers more well-done? Let them cook longer on low heat with a lid on the pan.

Food Pairing with Burgers

Because Black Angus beef pairs so well with different flavors, our butchers passionately create unique combinations. Cheddar/jalapeno, Old Amsterdam/mustard, mozzarella/basil/tomato, gorgonzola/cranberry, sun-dried tomato/Parmesan burgers: just a few of the incredible Black Angus burgers crafted by our butchers. Looking to try an out-of-the-box burger? Look no further!

Black Angus Burger

As mentioned, at The Butchery, we work extensively with USA Black Angus beef. A 100% certified USA Black Angus burger is, in our opinion, the ultimate American burger experience. Black Angus burgers are incredibly tender and juicy, thanks to the excellent marbling of this remarkable breed. Our Black Angus burgers are ground and crafted in-house, weighing approximately 140 grams each. These are substantial burgers, perfect for BBQ enthusiasts and just as delicious in a pan.

Our Angus burgers come from North American Black Angus cattle, raised naturally without artificial additives. Farmers adhere to the ‘Non-Hormone Treated Cattle’ guidelines, ensuring the animals are free from hormones, preventive antibiotics, and animal by-products. These cattle graze on expansive pastures, feeding naturally on grass, herbs, and other natural resources. It takes time, but the result is worth it.

Burger Battle

Burgers come in all shapes and sizes, and the possibilities are endless. One recipe can’t do them justice because everyone has their own taste. Our Butchery Burger Battle last summer showcased the most incredible burger creations. From a surf-and-turf burger with octopus to homemade steamed buns with Asian-inspired flavors, taco burgers, and more. Here’s a small compilation:
