What is a Bresse chicken?
The Bresse chicken is a breed from the Middle East of France, the region called 'Bresse'. The Bresse chicken was the very first animal in France to receive name protection, namely AOC, or Appellation d'origine contrôlée. The Bresse chicken has a large amount of living space and is fed very high-quality food. The controls on this are strict. The AOC actually says that the 'De Bresse chicken' breed stands for top quality meat and that also comes with a price tag. But then you do have delicious meat!
Bresse chicken can be recognized by its red comb, white feathers and blue legs, with a ring with the name of the breeder.
